WARWICK, R.I. — September 15, 2026 — Rhode Island parents and first-time authors Michael and Margaret Racette have released The Phantom Bat: A Halloween Tradition of Magic, Kindness, and Family, a new children's book designed to turn Halloween reading into an interactive family tradition.

Created with their three young sons in mind, The Phantom Bat introduces families to a friendly, mysterious bat and a Halloween tradition centered on spreading kindness from one home to the next.

After experiencing the story, families can create their own Phantom Bat, write a kind message, add a few treats or goodies, and secretly deliver the surprise to another family. The recipients display the Phantom Bat they received and then continue the tradition by surprising someone new.

"My wife grew up with a family tradition like this, and when we had kids of our own, we decided to try it ourselves," said Michael Racette. "We crept up to their porch, left the bundle by the door, and ran — the kids were laughing and jumping the whole way home, already planning who we'd surprise next. That was the moment I knew we had to share this with other families, and a story felt like the best way to do it."

The Racettes have also created an online Phantom Bat Club, where families can find printable Phantom Bat templates, games and activities to help bring the tradition to life.  The book was published through the couple's Rhode Island-based Oak Hill Ink LLC and illustrated by Remesh Ram. Following its launch, The Phantom Bat reached #1 New Release in its Amazon category.

The Phantom Bat is currently available in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle editions on Amazon.
